What TikTok actually requires to go live.
Most confusion about TikTok live comes from mixing up three rules. They are separate. They ask for different things.
It matters, because two of the three do not apply to your shop at all.
Rule one: selling on TikTok Shop
To open a TikTok Shop you must be 18 or older and in the US. You need an ID and a bank account.
There is no follower minimum. None. A brand new account with no followers can open a shop and sell.
Rule two: going live
To broadcast a live show, that account needs 1,000 followers. The person must also be 18 or older.
This is the rule that stops most shops. It is also the one we solve. The live shows run on our accounts, not yours.
Rule three: affiliate status
Affiliates sell other people's products for a cut. You need 1,000 followers to apply. The open marketplace asks for more.
Selling your own stock? This rule does not apply to you.
What this means for a small shop
Your shop needs no followers. The account going live does.
That is the whole gap. It is why agency accounts exist. You are not buying followers. You are using an account that already counts.
Common questions
- Can I sell on TikTok with no followers?
- Yes. A TikTok Shop has no follower minimum. What you cannot do is broadcast a live show from your own account.
- How do I sell on TikTok live without 1,000 followers?
- Someone else's account does the broadcast. That is what an agency account is. Your shop stays yours and the sales go to it.
- Is the age limit 16 or 18?
- 18. Some old articles say 16. That was true before TikTok raised it. Check TikTok's own safety pages, not a blog.
- Do these rules change?
- They have before. Check TikTok's own pages for the current numbers. Do not trust any article, this one included.
